Course Information

 

Pilates exercises use the deep stability muscles, which through lifestyle and poor posture, many of us stop using.  Pilates exercises teach us to reawaken and coordinate the use of these muscles that are essential as a foundation for good posture, movement quality and back health.  Learning Pilates and learning to drive are often compared, as both require patience, practise and commitment.

 

Courses

 

Classes are run as courses.  Courses run in term times and may vary from 5 to 7 weeks (half term).  The price per class is reduced if paying for a full term, as opposed to half.  Full payment is required prior to the start of the course.  Please see under Current Courses and Fees for more information on prices, dates and location.

 

Beginners

 

To perform Pilates exercises correctly, an ability/understanding of the following principles is required; correct head and neck alignment, shoulder stability, thoracic breathing, deep abdominal and pelvic floor contraction and neutral spine.  If you do not understand these principles, you will not be able to benefit fully from Pilates exercises.

 

Participants with no previous Pilates experience should attend a Pilates 'workshop' in order to be introduced to the basic principles before attending a Beginner or Beginner/Improver level of class.  The workshops last 2 hours and are usually held on Saturday afternoons (see under 'Beginners' for next scheduled workshop date).  Alternatively, you can have a private 1:1 session to be introduced to the basic principles.

 

Beginner/Improvers Courses

 

Having understood the basic principles, participants may then join a Beginner or Beginner/Improver Course.  In all classes there is likely to be mixed levels of ability.  It is possible to offer different levels of each exercise to allow for this, however, the Beginner/Improver courses will be aimed at a basic/general level.  Not all participants want to progress to an 'Improver only' level - they may wish to do 'maintenance' type exercise, possibly due to a physical condition that would make some of the more advanced exercises unsuitable. (Note: Improver only classes are more of a 'workout' - not everyone wants this after a long day at work!).

 

Improvers Courses

 

These courses are for those who have attended approximately a year or more of Pilates classes.  The pace will be faster as the exercises will be familiar and a more advanced level of exercise will be offered.  It is expected that participants should have more strength and body awareness at this level.  Body awareness is of particular importance, without this, participants could make themselves vulnerable to injury if struggling to do exercises beyond their strength level. At this level, alternatives will still be offered.

 

 

What do I wear and do I need to bring anything?

  •  Wear comfortable clothing that you can move freely in (e.g. jogging pants and T-shirt).  ‘Layers’ are ideal so that you can put on/take off clothing as necessary to keep at optimum temperature.

  •  You will not wear shoes during the session.  Please wear/bring socks.

  •  It is always a good idea to bring water with you.  This will not be provided.

  •  Mats will be provided and head blocks will be provided.  Some clients prefer to bring a towel for extra cushioning (eg, under hips when lying on their side).
