Modern Pilates

 

Cherry Baker, a leading fitness educator and Christopher Norris, MSc, MCSP, a renowned and respected Sports Physiotherapist, along with Northern Fitness and Education, have developed modern Pilates.

 

Whilst the great Joseph Pilates proved himself to be a genius, many of his exercises would be classed as controversial in the light of today’s sports science.  J Pilates wrote several books on fitness, many of which are difficult to get hold of today.  Joseph himself describes many of the exercises in his books as advanced.  This was mainly due to the type of clientele he was working with, he had moved on from injured soldiers to professional dancers, actresses and gymnasts.

 

Modern Pilates is a modern approach to Pilates based exercise.  It is a combination of stability techniques used in physiotherapy and traditional Pilates movements.  The programme of exercises is designed to develop balance throughout the body and strong stable muscles that are also flexible and correctly aligned.  Modern Pilates aim is to allow clients to use many of the MP methods in everyday life both at work and at play.  Many clients attend classes not only because of the physical benefits but also for the relaxation and mental focus that each session is designed to provide.

 

The programme is designed with precision in mind and does not rely on repetition or momentum.  It addresses trunk stability throughout.  Back and upper body problems are associated with spine instability and weak core abdominal muscles.  Many of the Modern Pilates principles are based on up to date research from the world of physiotherapy and other holistic forms of exercise.  It also addresses both shoulder girdle stabilisation, maintenance of the natural alignment and form of the spine along with precise movement and muscle recruitment.

 

Many of the postural problems we see today are the cause of our modern life.  Sitting at computers and in office chairs act against our normal balanced posture.  However, we must remember that some factors are beyond our control (genetics and injury) and that changes cannot be made over night.

 

 Modern Pilates believe that each Client deserves individual attention and that each class and each individual exercise has the health and well being of every class member in its planning and execution.  Class numbers are limited to allow for this.

 

THE BENEFITS

 

Modern Pilates is designed to offer smooth flowing movements from a stable base.  Each movement comes from a strong centre.  The aim is to realign muscles and open up spaces between each vertebra.  Class members have even reported gains in height.

 

Back stability is fundamental to any Pilates programme.  Our core muscles affect the support of the spine, posture and the way we move.  Correcting stability and increasing body awareness can benefit any individual from the sports person to the elderly client.

 

Older clients can improve their balance and in time will allow clients to feel more confident in moving and the correct execution of daily activities.

In general clients will gain:

  •  Greater muscle strength and endurance improving both physical appearance and holistic well being

  •  Mobility and flexibility will be improved along with better posture and movement quality

  •  In a world of fast living and high stress level MP will help aid relaxation and reduce stress levels which will improve sleep and lifestyle

  •  The function of the lungs may be improved along with general circulation

  •  The function and efficiency of the pelvic floor often shows marked improvements

  •  In general it can lead to fewer injuries and improvement in back pain.

One of the differences between MP and some other training programmes is that it addresses correct lifting technique.  For even the most simple tasks clients will be encouraged to use tools from MP classes to plan the action of a lift and carefully minimise the risk.

 

Clients are recommended to also participate in some cardiovascular training and bone loading activities to help create a balanced programme and improve overall results.
